The now famous local and handmade e-commerce website Etsy was launched just over ten years ago. It has become a must ever since, giving everyone, from young designers to hobbyists, the opportunity to sell their products. Opening a real store might be a turning point in this company's strategy. Etsy unveiled its first store ever two weeks ago, in one the most prestigious and visited location (20 million visitors each year): Macy's Herald Square, in New York City.
The Etsy Shop is on Macy's recently refurbished lower level, knowned one below. The retailer's buying teams have selected more than 50 products from eight lucky Etsy sellers, along with five special items created for Macy's by Etsy shops Sol del Sur, Meera Lee Patel, and Modern Mud. The selection includes jewelry, homewares as well as stationery and, as Etsy stated, it "will be refreshed with new products every six to eight weeks, focusing on a different theme during each selling cycle".
Dana Mauriello, Director of Seller Category Growth at Etsy, also explained that "this partnership offers the opportunity for these Etsy sellers to share their designs with the tens of thousands of customers from around the world that visit Macy’s Herald Square each day. The Etsy Shop at Macy’s will bring to life the connections made between designers and buyers in search of unique goods. Shoppers will be able to learn more about the person behind the products through displays that tell the story of the designer and offer a sneak peak into their making process."
