Save A Lot started from a single store as way back as 1977. After working as a grocery wholesale store keeper, Bill Moran decided to set up his own venture starting with a single store designed to give mega stores stiff competition. Starting with the first store which was opened in 1977 in Cahokia, Illinois, and his design of grocery store soon became a favorite for shoppers.
After a short time in business, General Grocer which was a major brand by then noticed the potential in Bill’s model and adopted his idea. This was the beginning of great things for the Save A Lot chain. Upon this adoption, the store soon expanded from a single outlet to 29 stores within the same year. Come 1980, the chain added another 52 stores making it a major grocery outlet with outlets in other regions besides the US.
